Giant sports fan zone coming to Birmingham city centre with live music and circus
Giant sports fan zone with live music and circus in Birmingham

Centenary Square is set to become a giant sporting fan zone this summer, hosting a free four-day festival to celebrate the European Athletics Championships. The event, named Champions Square, will run from August 13 to 16, marking the first time the championships have come to Britain.

What to expect at the fan zone

The city centre venue will feature a large screen broadcasting the athletics events live from Alexander Stadium, where over 1,600 athletes from 48 nations will compete. Beyond the screenings, visitors can enjoy live music, dance performances, street theatre, circus acts, and interactive family activities—all free of charge.

The cultural programme is curated by Outdoor Places Unusual Spaces (OPUS), the team behind the Birmingham Light Festival earlier this year. The aim is to recreate the vibrant atmosphere of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Call for local performers

An open call has been launched inviting local creators to contribute to the fan zone. Performers and artists interested in taking part can apply until Monday, July 20 at 11:59pm. Funding comes from Birmingham City Council's Together on Culture Magnets and Moonshots programme.

Coun Deborah Harries, cabinet member for culture at Birmingham City Council, said: "The European Athletics Championships is the cornerstone of an exciting summer of sport in Birmingham. As we have seen previously at events such as the Commonwealth Games, major events like this not only underline Birmingham's credentials as a world class city of sport but also provide an opportunity to showcase our wider cultural offer to residents and visitors alike. We are, therefore, delighted to support this programme as part of our Together On Culture strategic framework. We look forward to seeing the city's creativity come to life on stage during the championships."

Community and economic impact

The fan zone is expected to draw large crowds to the city centre, boosting local businesses and reinforcing Birmingham's reputation as a premier destination for major sporting events. The free entry ensures accessibility for all families and individuals, promoting community engagement and cultural participation.
