Immersive Night Walk 'Stories We Tell' Illuminates Rochdale's Hidden Histories

Breaking Barriers with Young Company has launched Stories We Tell, an immersive night-time walk through Rochdale that brings local stories to life with light and sound. This unique experience uses 360° audio through headphones and projections onto buildings to reveal hidden histories and memories of the town.

A Community Gathering Under the Stars

On a cold January evening at Rochdale Railway Station, participants from diverse ages and backgrounds gathered for the event. Parvez Qadir and his team of volunteers welcomed everyone, providing headphones and explaining what to expect. The walk proved to be as powerful and effective as the publicity suggested, combining atmospheric music and sound effects with personal narratives.

As attendees walked through Rochdale, they heard stories from the town, discovering new insights and boosting pride in the community. Video and images were projected onto exterior walls, including at Rochdale Town Hall, creating a visually stunning backdrop. A highlight was the visit to St John the Baptist church, where an amazing mosaic was cleverly lit and the dome filled with projected stars.

Surprises and Live Performances

The route passed Champness Hall, where reminiscences about historical events were shared. A delightful surprise stop featured live music from local musician and singer Ed Jamil of the band Pool Era, adding a moving, unexpected element to the experience. The event concluded with hot chocolate at the famous San Remo café on Drake Street, providing a fitting end to an enjoyable and informative evening.

Parvez and the team received praise for creating an inspiring event. The steady walk takes about an hour and is designed to be accessible for wheelchairs and buggies, suitable for all ages. Throughout, the team ensured safety by controlling road crossings and lighting uneven ground with torches.
