King Charles and Queen Camilla attended the annual Braemar Gathering in the Cairngorms National Park on 5 September 2026, where thousands of spectators welcomed them before the royal couple travelled to Balmoral for talks with Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
Royal arrival at the Highland Games
The King and Queen were greeted by crowds at the renowned Highland Games event, which is well-known for its royal associations. The sun broke through the clouds, and the picturesque rural surroundings came alive as spectators flocked to the venue nestled in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park.
The crowd rose to its feet to welcome the royal couple before joining together to sing the national anthem. Pipers and drummers were met with thunderous applause from the assembled audience as they marched around the games arena.
Competitions and cultural showcase
A wide range of competitions were on show, from cross country racing and tug of war to caber tossing, the high jump and Highland dancing. The Queen received a heather posy from 11-year-old Highland dancer Ally Dey.
Compere Robert Lovie declared during the royal arrival: "We are greatly honoured that your majesties have graced us with your presence today, which enriches this gathering and all that Highland Games and culture represents, and I know I speak for everyone – both in your beloved Royal Deeside and from the family of Highland Games officials and competitors – in sending you both our warmest and most loyal good wishes."
Balmoral discussions with the Prime Minister
After the festivities, the royal couple departed for Balmoral to meet Andy Burnham. The event showcased the finest of athletes, sportsmen and women, dancers, pipers and drummers, as well as a proud showcase of talent from the armed forces, according to Lovie.
The Braemar Gathering remains a key date in the royal calendar, combining tradition with community celebration in the Scottish Highlands.
