Newark Launches Ambitious Bid to Become UK's First Town of Culture
Newark has officially launched a bold, community-wide bid to become the United Kingdom's first-ever Town of Culture. This initiative unites cultural organisations, community groups, youth leaders, businesses, creatives, and artists in a collective effort to celebrate the town's vibrant creativity and firmly place culture at the heart of its future development.
A Transformative £3 Million Opportunity
If successful, this new national competition will award Newark a substantial £3 million grant. This funding is designated to deliver a truly transformative programme of cultural activities throughout the year 2028. With its rich heritage, beautiful riverside setting, and proud history as a thriving centre of trade, Newark offers a unique and compelling blend of deep tradition and modern energy.
The core ambition of the bid is both simple and powerful: to establish Newark as the best market town in the UK to live in. The vision is a town where culture is seamlessly integrated into everyone's daily life, where all residents have equitable access to cultural experiences, and where creativity actively informs how the community grows and thrives.
Celebrating a 'Deep Glow' of Creativity
Newark is already brimming with creative thinkers and makers, offering an eclectic mix from vintage treasures and antiques to books, finely crafted musical instruments, sports, and local food and drink. From its famous markets to its independent businesses and thriving community organisations, a thread of creativity runs through every part of the town.
However, Newark's cultural strength lies not just in what is visible on the surface. As the bid team eloquently states, it is 'a place of deep glow, not just surface shine'. The bid aims to tell the stories of the town's world-class creativity and forge stronger connections between people across all communities.
Building a Legacy Beyond Boundaries
The campaign, aptly named 'Made in Newark', is bringing together a wide coalition to create cultural waves that will extend far beyond the town's boundaries. The proposed cultural programme is designed to welcome audiences from across the East Midlands and beyond, while simultaneously developing models of best practice that can be shared with other towns across the UK.
The bid will build upon the creativity already flourishing across Newark by collaborating directly with communities. This involves understanding existing local activities and supporting groups that are already doing great work to help them thrive further. Practical work has already commenced with the formation of a dedicated Youth Advisory Group and a series of open consultation sessions held last week at Newark College.
Community Voices and Lasting Change
Everyone in Newark has a role to play in this exciting endeavour. Residents will be invited to make, talk, share stories, and celebrate the creativity within their own communities. By connecting people, celebrating local talent, increasing participation, and building cultural capacity, the initiative aims to inspire lasting, positive change for the town.
Sophie Dickinson, representing the Youth Advisory Board, said: "There are so many talented young people in Newark – in music, sport, art, writing, and digital creativity – and this bid gives us the opportunity to share that with the rest of the UK. We want young people across the town to get involved, take pride in where they live, and help show what Newark can do."
Penny Taylor MBE of Newark College added: "Newark is a place of deep creativity – a town with a rich history and a huge amount of energy and innovation. The Town of Culture bid gives us all an opportunity to celebrate what already exists here while creating new opportunities for people to take part in culture and creativity. It's time for us to come together!"
The public is invited to support the bid by signing up on the official campaign website and by promoting Newark in the media using the dedicated hashtag #madeinnewark.
