Sevenoaks Enters Regional Horticultural Competition

Beautiful gardens, vibrant flowerbeds, and unique community displays across Sevenoaks have been showcased for a major regional horticultural competition. Judges toured the town to evaluate the impressive local entries for the annual South and South East In Bloom event.

This year the displays took inspiration from a special nature theme to honour the 100th birthday of broadcasting legend Sir David Attenborough. The green-fingered campaign also focused heavily on protecting local wildlife by planting a variety of flowers that attract bees and other pollinators.

Volunteer Efforts and Community Involvement

Dedicated volunteers teamed up with council workers to ensure the town looked its absolute best ahead of the important judging day. Local residents, housing association members, and community groups all donated their time and gardening skills to transform the shared public spaces.

Neighbouring Rockdale Village made a significant contribution to the project by creating handmade bird boxes and hedgehog houses to shelter local wildlife. Residents there also crafted impressive papier-mâché globes and knitted animals to match the environmental theme of the tour.

Creative Displays and Youth Participation

Former youth award winner Bonnie helped out by organising a sponsored community tidy-up and a fresh planting session with her friends at The Vine gardens. Fellow young champion Willow Loudon, aged 12, used her creative talents to craft remarkable crocheted postbox toppers featuring an octopus and a tortoise, including a David Attenborough-themed topper to support the community entry.

Keen crafters from several local library groups and clubs joined the effort by knitting colourful caterpillars and butterflies to decorate the town centre. Eight schools also took part in the environmental initiative by painting animal-themed rocks and building large outdoor flower sculptures.

Educational and Biodiversity Efforts

Students from one local academy even carried out a detailed insect audit to check on the biodiversity of the public parklands. Families can still experience the trail by picking up an activity game sheet from the local café to earn a special completion sticker.

Organisers have shared their gratitude to the numerous partners, helpers, and local business sponsors who backed the community entry. For more information, visit: www.sevenoakstown.gov.uk
