60 Minute Makeover Episode Never Aired After Causing Severe Distress

Craig Phillips, the former Big Brother winner and long-time contributor to the ITV show 60 Minute Makeover, has disclosed details about the only episode of the series that was never broadcast. The incident involved a grieving widower who returned home to discover his furniture, including items belonging to his late wife, had been broken and discarded in a skip.

A Surprise Gone Terribly Wrong

Speaking on behalf of CasinoHawks, Phillips recounted the episode, which he believes was filmed in South Wales. The show typically operates as a surprise for the homeowner, with a family member secretly coordinating access. In this case, the man's daughter had arranged the makeover, but she misjudged her father's emotional state following the recent loss of his wife.

Phillips explained that the crew had completely dismantled the house during the allotted time, pulling up carpets, removing wardrobes, and even ripping out the kitchen. Some of the late wife's carefully stored clothes and belongings were disturbed in the process.

The Unraveling of a Well-Intentioned Plan

While the daughter took her father out for the day, he grew increasingly upset and insisted on returning home early. She contacted the producer, who urged her to reassure him and allow the makeover to continue, even offering to avoid filming him. However, the man refused, took control of the car, and drove back.

Upon arrival, the widower was furious and deeply distressed to see a skip filled with broken furniture, much of it holding sentimental value. Phillips described the scene as horrific, noting the crew scrambled to gather equipment as the car approached.

Aftermath and ITV's Response

The episode was ultimately scrapped, with the decision escalating to ITV executives. Phillips stated it was the only project where the team was never permitted to return to the house. He believes ITV had to send crews back on additional days to restore the property as much as possible.

Reflecting on the incident, Phillips emphasized that while he loved working on the show, this particular day was exceptionally sad and challenging. He attributed the failure to the daughter's misjudgment of her father's grief, highlighting the risks involved in such surprise transformations.
