Chloe Cherry Addresses Controversial Cassie Plot in Euphoria Season 3
Chloe Cherry, known for her role as Faye in the hit HBO series Euphoria, has publicly shared her thoughts on the controversial storyline involving Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, in the show's third season. The new season, which premiered recently, has sparked significant online discourse and backlash, particularly regarding Cassie's character development.
Season 3 Time Jump and Character Arcs
Euphoria season 3 introduces a dramatic five-year time jump, depicting the characters navigating life after high school. Rue is involved in drug trafficking, Jules has become a sugar baby, and Cassie has turned to sharing nude content online. This decision is driven by her desire to afford extravagant wedding flowers costing $50,000, despite already living a wealthy lifestyle with her partner Nate.
The explicit scenes, crafted by series creator Sam Levinson, have been met with intense criticism from viewers, with many labeling them as "fetish slop." This backlash has unfortunately extended to Sydney Sweeney herself, who has faced considerable scrutiny for her portrayal.
Chloe Cherry's Personal Perspective
In an interview with Refinery29, Chloe Cherry offered her unique viewpoint on the storyline, drawing from her own experiences in the adult industry. Before joining Euphoria, Cherry starred in an adult parody of the series, which adds depth to her commentary.
"For me, it just feels crazy as f--- to see somebody living like Cassie turn to sex work," Cherry stated, highlighting Cassie's lack of financial struggle. "Like, holy s---, that’s where we’re at in society?!"
She further elaborated on the normalization of sex work in contemporary culture, attributing it to economic pressures rather than empowerment. "[OF] and sex work has become more normalized, but it's literally only because of capitalism and the economy getting worse," Cherry explained. "It has nothing to do with empowerment or power. The economy is horrible, that's why people are turning to it."
Cherry described this trend as a "crazy, weird phenomenon of the 2020's" that future generations may look back on with confusion.
Sydney Sweeney's Interpretation of Cassie
Sydney Sweeney has also shared her take on Cassie's storyline, emphasizing the character's confidence and agency. "Cassie is very confident, she knows how to make money with her body. That's just what Cassie does," Sweeney said.
She added that Cassie experiences no shame in her actions, finding fun and freedom in her choices. "Cassie doesn't really have shame in it, she's having fun, and she's getting to be wild which—that's just what she wants to do right now. I think that that's her version of the American dream."
Despite the widespread criticism, Sweeney has not publicly addressed the backlash surrounding Cassie's plotline in season 3.
The controversy continues to fuel discussions among fans and critics alike, as Euphoria explores complex themes of identity, economy, and societal norms in its latest installment.
