Ruth Gemmell Cried Over Violet's Bridgerton Sex Scene

Bridgerton Star Ruth Gemmell's Emotional Reaction to Violet's Intimate Scene

Ruth Gemmell, the actress portraying Violet Bridgerton in Netflix's popular period drama Bridgerton, has candidly shared that she "went home and cried" after discovering she would be filming a sex scene for her character. The revelation came during a costume fitting, where Gemmell realized she was being prepared for a storyline development she had not anticipated.

Violet's Romantic Journey Comes to Fruition

In Bridgerton season 4, viewers witness matriarch Violet Bridgerton finally acting on her feelings towards Lord Anderson, leading to intimate moments that have become a talking point among fans. This storyline began in the spin-off series Queen Charlotte, where Violet first expressed her desires, continued through a flirtatious relationship in season 3, and culminated in physical intimacy in the latest season.

The now-iconic "I am the tea that you will be having" scene occurs in episode 4, where Violet invites Lord Anderson over, anxiously awaits in lingerie, and their encounter is portrayed with discretion—cutting away before showing them together in bed later.

Gemmell's Initial Shock and Ultimate Satisfaction

In an interview with Ciné-Télé-Revue, Gemmell explained her reaction: "I was in a costume fitting, and I realised that I was being fitted for something that I had no idea was going to happen." She added, "I went home and cried," but noted she was ultimately pleased with how the scene was handled.

"Thankfully, we tackled this one in a slightly different way to the kids of the show. Because I don't think anyone would want to watch that really. So yeah, I was a bit shocked," Gemmell stated.

Praise from Co-Stars and Significance of the Scene

Co-star Golda Rosheuvel praised Gemmell's performance, calling the scene "done beautifully," with Gemmell highlighting the effective use of low lighting. The actress emphasized the importance of depicting love and sexuality for older women, particularly those who have experienced loss and grief.

"We don’t die after a certain age," Gemmell remarked. "It’s wonderful to show that love is possible at any stage of life."

Future Appearances and Potential Spin-Off

Gemmell will reprise her role as Violet in the upcoming Bridgerton season 5, which is about to begin production. Additionally, there is potential for a spin-off series focusing on Violet and her late husband Edmund, as confirmed by executive producer Shonda Rhimes on the Glass Half Full podcast.

Rhimes expressed, "I’ve always said that I thought if we were going to do something like that, Violet would be a great person to tell the story about—the Bridgerton mom. Yeah, that's a possibility." Author Julia Quinn has given her blessing for Netflix to explore this story, despite previously stating she would never write a novel about it due to Edmund's tragic early death.
