There is exciting news for Birmingham residents who enjoy outdoor swimming. Droitwich Spa Lido, one of the few remaining saltwater open-air swimming pools in the UK, is set to undergo a massive £12.5 million expansion, including a new spa and bistro.
Preserving Art Deco Heritage
The art deco style lido, which celebrated its 90th birthday last year, is set in lush green parkland and has been a favourite among Brummies for decades. The proposed investment includes two new extensions designed to enhance the entrance and overall appearance while retaining the lido's original art deco building as the centrepiece and ensuring all new additions are in keeping with its historic style.
New Facilities Planned
The plans feature a new salt spa and brine pool. The first floor of the building will be refurbished to provide updated changing facilities that are more inclusive and accessible, including larger cubicles for families and improved access to the pool.
A spokesperson for Wychavon District Council, which is delivering the expansion, stated: "The proposals will retain the Lido's historic art deco building as the centrepiece of the site, with two new extensions designed to improve the entrance and overall look while staying in keeping with its original style. A new salt spa and brine pool experience will be created as part of the redevelopment. The plans also include a refurbishment of the first floor to provide new changing facilities, a bistro and spa. Changing facilities would be completely upgraded to provide more inclusive and accessible spaces, including larger cubicles for families and better access to the pool. The scheme is designed to improve the overall experience for visitors while helping secure the long-term future of the lido."
Timeline and Accessibility
The lido is currently open for the 2026 season and will remain open as normal throughout the summer. The start date for the expansion project is expected to be announced within the next couple of weeks.
