Free Shakespeare Sites Visits for West Midlands Locals Announced
Free Shakespeare Sites for West Midlands Locals

Residents of the West Midlands are being offered free access to Shakespeare's birthplace and other historic sites in Stratford-upon-Avon this spring, under a new scheme aimed at boosting local tourism and cultural engagement.

Free Access for Locals

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust has announced that from March 1 to April 30, 2024, anyone with a West Midlands postcode can visit five key Shakespeare-related attractions for free. These include Shakespeare's Birthplace, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Mary Arden's Farm, Hall's Croft, and Nash's House & New Place. The offer is valid for up to two adults and three children per household, with proof of residency required.

Encouraging Cultural Participation

According to the trust, the initiative is designed to encourage local residents to explore their cultural heritage. Rachael North, director of visitor experience at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, said: "We want to make it easier for people living in the West Midlands to connect with Shakespeare's legacy. This is a fantastic opportunity for families to enjoy a day out and discover the stories behind these historic sites."

Economic and Social Impact

The scheme is expected to attract thousands of visitors, boosting the local economy. Stratford-upon-Avon typically sees over 4.5 million tourists annually, but the trust hopes this offer will increase local footfall. The free visits also aim to break down barriers to access, particularly for families who may find ticket costs prohibitive. Standard entry prices range from £15 to £25 per adult, so the offer represents significant savings.

How to Claim

To take advantage of the offer, residents need to show a valid West Midlands postcode ID, such as a driving license or utility bill, at the ticket office. No pre-booking is required, but visitors are advised to check opening times in advance. The trust has also planned special events during the period, including storytelling sessions and craft workshops for children.

Broader Context

This initiative is part of a wider push to promote cultural tourism in the region. The West Midlands Combined Authority has invested in marketing campaigns to highlight local attractions. Similar free-entry schemes have been successful in other parts of the UK, such as the National Trust's 'Free for Locals' days. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust hopes this will become an annual event if uptake is strong.
