Stunning private gardens across Shropshire will open their gates to the public in 2024 as part of the National Garden Scheme (NGS), offering rare access to some of the county's most beautiful green spaces while raising funds for nursing and health charities.
Gardens Opening in 2024
The NGS has announced a series of openings across Shropshire, including gardens in Ludlow, Shrewsbury, and Bridgnorth. Among the highlights is the renowned 2.5-acre garden at 16 Mill Street in Ludlow, which will open on June 9 and July 14. This garden features a distinctive mix of herbaceous borders, a wildflower meadow, and a vegetable patch, all set against the backdrop of the historic town.
In Shrewsbury, the garden at 5 The Lawns will be open on May 5 and June 2. This garden is known for its extensive collection of over 200 varieties of roses, as well as a Japanese-inspired water feature. Visitors can also explore the 1.5-acre garden at The Old Rectory in Pontesbury, which opens on April 28 and August 11, boasting a woodland walk and a pond teeming with wildlife.
Charity and Community Impact
Entrance fees range from £3 to £6, with all proceeds going to the NGS, which supports charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, and the Royal Horticultural Society. According to the NGS, over £3 million was raised nationally in 2023, helping to fund nursing and community health projects.
“We are thrilled to offer such a diverse range of gardens this year,” said a spokesperson for the NGS. “Each garden has its own unique character, and visitors will be supporting vital healthcare charities.”
How to Visit
Many gardens also offer homemade teas and plant sales. Opening times are typically from 11am to 5pm. For a full list of openings and details, visit the NGS website. The season runs from April to September, with peak bloom expected in June and July.
