Edge Hill University Academic Publishes Groundbreaking Study on Jim Henson's Fairy Tale World

A senior lecturer from Edge Hill University has published what is being described as the definitive book examining Jim Henson's profound impact on the fairy tale genre. Dr Andrea Wright, a film studies expert, has released 'The Fairy Tales of Jim Henson: Keeping the best place by the fire', which presents a comprehensive chronological overview of Henson's influential career from the 1950s through to his death in 1990.

Challenging Established Narratives in Screen Fairy Tales

Dr Wright's research makes the bold claim that Henson's creative brilliance has been significantly underestimated as a key player in the evolution of screen fairy tales. The book stands out as the first comprehensive study to fully re-evaluate Henson's career through the specific lens of fairy tales, challenging the widely held notion that Disney represents the only major creative force in the genre.

"I really believe that Jim Henson was far more important to the screen fairy tale than has previously been explored," said Dr Wright. "All my life I have been exposed to and loved Henson's work, from The Muppet Show and Sesame Street to the movies, and I want to recognise and celebrate his unique contribution to the fairy tale."

Unprecedented Access to Private Archives

What makes this publication particularly significant is the unprecedented access Dr Wright was granted to materials from the private Jim Henson Company Archives. This allowed her to examine:

  • Personal letters and correspondence
  • Original sketches and doodles
  • Production plans and scripts
  • Behind-the-scenes creative documents

"Henson was a genius at sparking the viewer's imagination and mixing, sometimes even subverting, classic fairy tale tropes with inventive design and cutting-edge tech," Dr Wright explained, drawing on her extensive research.

From PhD Research to Published Work

The journey to publication began during Dr Wright's PhD research on 1980s screen fairy tales, when she first contacted The Jim Henson Company Archives for information about The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. Years later, she approached them again for her book project and was thrilled when the Henson family granted her permission to visit and access their private collections.

"While I don't dispute Disney's importance and reach, I want people to recognise that Jim Henson gave us many of the most witty, inventive and creative examples of fairy tales of the era," she added, emphasising her research's central thesis.

Book Launch and Public Engagement

The official launch of The Fairy Tales of Jim Henson will be held at Edge Hill University Arts Centre on Wednesday 18 February at 7pm. The event will feature:

  1. A special video message from Karen Falk, director of The Jim Henson Company Archive
  2. Insights into the collaborative work between Dr Wright and the Henson company
  3. An opportunity to hear directly from the author about her research

Entry to the launch event is free, though booking is required, and all members of the public are welcome to attend. The publication coincides with the 40th anniversary of Labyrinth, and Dr Wright recently attended the Labyrinth Experience, an exclusive masked ball in London, where she met fans and signed copies of her new book.

"I really want people to think about Jim Henson and his work a bit differently," Dr Wright concluded, describing her recent presentation about the research as the "highlight of the year". Her work represents a significant contribution to film studies and offers a fresh perspective on one of the most creative minds in twentieth-century entertainment.
