Aston Villa captain John McGinn has received a unique tribute in his homeland: a bus named after him. Scottish bus firm McGill's Buses renamed one of its vehicles 'McGinn' to show support for the nation's World Cup hopes. The bus, operating in Glasgow and Clydebank, was unveiled on TikTok with the soundtrack 'No Scotland No Party', amassing over 13,000 likes. Fans praised the gesture, with comments like 'Go on McGill's buses' and 'That's fantastic'.
Bus Tribute Reflects National Pride
Colin Napier, Group Service Delivery Director at McGill's, explained: 'Scotland reaching the World Cup is something the whole country can celebrate, and we wanted to mark the occasion in a way that would get people smiling. John McGinn has become one of the real faces of this Scotland team. He plays with heart, humour and total commitment, so turning one of our buses into McGinn's felt like the perfect tribute.'
McGinn's brother Stephen welcomed the move, joking that John would be 'equal parts proud and embarrassed' to see his name on a bus. He added: 'He has always given absolutely everything for Scotland and the support from fans means a huge amount to him and the players.'
Mural in Hometown Clydebank
The bus tribute follows a mural of McGinn in his hometown of Clydebank, painted on a house near where he grew up. It shows him performing his iconic goggle celebration, which he first used for his nephew Jack, who wears goggles due to poor eyesight. The mural includes his Scotland squad number seven and the phrase 'Made in Clydebank. From Girders', a nod to Irn-Bru's slogan. McGinn called it 'absolutely top class' and 'surreal'.
McGinn's Career Highlights
McGinn, who attended St Columba's High School and St Peter the Apostle High School, comes from a footballing family: his brothers Stephen and Paul also play professionally, and his grandfather Jack McGinn was Celtic chairman and SFA president. He already has a mural at the Witton Arms pub near Villa Park in Birmingham, featuring the chant 'We've got McGinn...Super John McGinn'.
Recently, McGinn captained Aston Villa to a 3-0 Europa League victory over Freiburg in Istanbul, calling it the 'proudest night' of his career. He reflected: 'I can't believe it to be honest. What we've been through as a club... Tonight was everything we built coming together.'
