EastEnders star Derek Martin dies aged 92

The world of British television is in mourning following the announcement that Derek Martin, the actor best known for his iconic role as Charlie Slater in BBC's EastEnders, has died. He was 92 years old.

A Family's Heartfelt Tribute

His family confirmed the sad news on 11th January 2026, revealing he passed away the previous day. In a moving statement released through his agent, they remembered him as far more than a performer. "Derek wasn’t just a dad to us he was a friend and supported us through our highs and lows," they said. They described a man who "never stopped learning" and was "always generous with his time," concluding, "We both miss him terribly." The family has requested privacy during this difficult period.

A Working-Class Voice on Screen

Martin's spokesperson paid tribute to a career that spanned over five decades, calling him "a truly authentic working-class voice in British television and film." His notable work included roles in the BBC's Law And Order and two series of The Governor from La Plante Productions. However, it was his tenure in Albert Square that cemented his place in the nation's heart.

He first appeared as the head of the turbulent Slater clan in 2000, becoming a fixture of the show for more than 11 years. His character was written out in 2016 in emotional scenes where Charlie suffered a fatal heart attack. Reflecting on his departure at the time, Martin expressed satisfaction, stating the executive producer had promised him "a good send-off" and that it provided "closure" after a long and rewarding run.

EastEnders and Colleagues Remember a 'Devoted' Man

The BBC soap has also issued a statement honouring their former star. An EastEnders spokesman said they were "deeply saddened" by the loss, noting that Martin's portrayal instantly made Charlie Slater beloved. "Charlie would do anything for his family, and much like his character, Derek would do the same for those around him," the tribute read, adding that he was "deeply loved by all those that worked with him."

Beyond the set, Derek Martin was known as a devoted father, an active member of the charitable Water Rats organisation, and an avid golfer. His spokesperson summarised him as an "all-around good man who will be greatly missed," leaving a legacy both on-screen and off.
