A new study has identified a district in the West Midlands as one of the UK's leading hotspots for independent cafes. The research, conducted by coffee brand Nescafe Azera, analysed data from Google Maps and Tripadvisor to determine the areas with the highest concentration of indie coffee shops per capita.
Kings Heath Tops the List
The Birmingham suburb of Kings Heath emerged as the top location in the West Midlands, ranking fifth nationally. The area boasts 13 independent cafes per 100,000 residents, placing it behind only London's Soho, Edinburgh's Old Town, Manchester's Northern Quarter, and Bristol's Stokes Croft.
According to the study, Kings Heath has a vibrant cafe culture, with a mix of traditional and modern establishments. The area is known for its high street, which features a variety of independent retailers and eateries.
Other West Midlands Locations
Other West Midlands locations that made the list include Moseley, ranked 12th with 10 indie cafes per 100,000 people, and Harborne, ranked 18th with 8 per 100,000. The study highlights the region's growing reputation for independent food and drink offerings.
Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for Nescafe Azera said: "It's fantastic to see the West Midlands thriving with independent cafes. Kings Heath, in particular, has a wonderful community feel and a great selection of places to enjoy a quality coffee."
National Trends
The study also revealed that independent cafes are becoming increasingly popular across the UK, with many consumers seeking out unique, locally-run establishments over chain coffee shops. The trend is particularly strong in residential areas with a strong sense of community.
Kings Heath's ranking is expected to boost local tourism and support for small businesses. The area's cafe owners have expressed pride in the recognition, noting that it reflects the hard work and passion of local entrepreneurs.
Impact on Local Economy
The indie cafe boom is having a positive impact on the local economy, creating jobs and attracting visitors. According to local business groups, the success of these cafes often leads to increased footfall for nearby shops and services.
Residents have also welcomed the news, with many taking to social media to celebrate the area's achievement. One local said: "Kings Heath has always been a special place, and this just confirms what we already knew – we have some of the best cafes in the country."
