Cheryl has offered a rare glimpse of her nine-year-old son Bear Payne during a heartfelt family trip to Walt Disney World in Florida, joined by Liam Payne's sister Ruth Gibbins. Fans were quick to note how much Bear reminds them of his late father.
Family Holiday to Disney World
The Girls Aloud star shared a rare peek at Bear this week while on a family getaway to Disney World, Orlando. The trip held particular significance as it was reportedly made in honour of Bear's late father, Liam Payne, who passed away in 2024. Cheryl described the two-week trip as a chance to 'escape into my inner child,' sharing on Instagram that 'somewhere in the corners of the world magic still exists'.
The star was joined by Liam's sister, Ruth Gibbins, along with Ruth's husband and son. Ruth noted the visit was 'bittersweet' given her brother's love for the resort. The group was spotted enjoying various attractions, including Hollywood Studios, where Cheryl and Bear wore matching grey tracksuits, Toy Story Mania! and the Floating Mountains of Pandora in Animal Kingdom, as well as watching Mickey Mouse perform.
Fans Notice Bear's Resemblance to Liam
Following Cheryl's Instagram post, fans were taken aback by how much Bear has grown, with many commenting that the nine-year-old is nearly as tall as his mum. One follower wrote: 'Little Bear is not little anymore.' While another added: 'Bear has grown so much! I'm glad you visited this magical place, so beloved by Liam.' Others also observed that Bear 'had Liam's walk', with one person commenting: 'Wow Bear has grown and walking like his daddy, beautiful Cheryl, you are an awesome mummy to take Bear to his daddy's favourite place, bless you both.' Another concurred: 'Bear and Liam have got the same walk.'
Consistent with her long-held practice, Cheryl ensured Bear's face was concealed in all shared footage to protect his privacy.
Background on Liam Payne's Death
Liam died on 16 October 2024, aged 31, after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A post-mortem examination and a subsequent UK inquest determined the medical cause of death was polytrauma – a term describing multiple traumatic injuries sustained to the body and organ systems. Bear was born in 2017 after Cheryl and Liam, who first met on the X Factor, began dating a year earlier.
Cheryl and Liam's Relationship
Cheryl and Liam publicly announced their separation on 1 July 2018, following a two-and-a-half-year relationship. While their joint statement described the break up as a 'tough decision' reached while they still had 'so much love for each other as a family,' additional details about the reasons behind their split have since emerged. Liam later admitted that constant public scrutiny made it extremely difficult to lead a 'normal' life, revealing that even going outside became a source of tension and anxiety. At the time of their separation, Liam was deeply focused on his solo career, which required extended periods travelling and working in the US, while Cheryl remained at home caring for their young son, Bear.
Despite parting ways, the pair remained remarkably amicable, living just minutes apart to co-parent Bear. Cheryl had previously described Liam as the 'only man who has ever been faithful' to her.
Cheryl's Statement After Liam's Death
In October 2024, following Liam's tragic and untimely death, Cheryl spoke about the heartbreaking reality of her son Bear growing up without his father. She said at the time: 'As I try to navigate this earth shattering event, and work through my own grief at this indescribably painful time, I'd like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being. Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our 7 year old son. A son that now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again.'
