Brechin Castle is gearing up to host an exhilarating weekend of classic motorsport this summer, all in support of a vital lifesaving service. The venue will welcome North East Scotland's first Lombard Rally Festival on June 14 and 15. This special event aims to raise crucial funds for the Scottish Air Ambulance.
Festival Kick-Off with Charity Golf Day
The festivities begin on June 11 with a charity golf day at the nearby Edzell Golf Club before the main action moves to the castle grounds. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness legendary historic rally cars from the 1960s through to the early 2000s, driving on a specially constructed period stage. These non-competitive events are held across the UK to celebrate vehicles that can no longer compete due to changing regulations and scarce parts.
Family-Friendly Access to Iconic Cars
Families will enjoy a unique chance to get up close to famous cars such as Audi Quattros, Lancias, and Peugeots, without having to trek miles through a forest. The festival draws inspiration from the renowned Lombard RAC Rallies of the 1970s and 1980s, which once attracted larger crowds than a weekend of football matches.
Racing Legends in Attendance
Several racing heroes will be present to meet fans and drive the classic cars, including Finland's Harri Toivonen and German champion Harald Demuth. They will be joined by Andy Dawson, the only driver to win a forest international rally in a Lancia Stratos. An informal dinner will be held at Edzell Golf Club on Saturday evening, where guests can enjoy hospitality and hear captivating stories from the tracks.
Charity Golf Day and Auction
The charity golf day on Thursday features an 11am shotgun start, followed by an evening auction of motorsport memorabilia. Generous attendees can even purchase passenger rides in iconic cars like the Audi Quattro S1E2 alongside expert drivers, all in support of the charity.
Historic Rally Cars for Hire
The organisers also offer historic rally cars for hire, including a Nissan Sunny and a Ford Escort, complete with tuition from a former World Champion. A beautiful display of classic and sports cars will be parked outside the castle gates for everyone to enjoy. With a round of the World Rally Championship expected to arrive in Aberdeen in 2027, this event serves as the perfect warm-up act.
