Vibrant crochet displays are appearing on postboxes throughout the country to celebrate a landmark birthday for Sir David Attenborough. These handmade tributes to British nature are being installed to honour the legendary broadcaster as he turns 100 years old today.
Project Launched by Hobbycraft
The project has been launched by Hobbycraft to bring a splash of colour and joy to local high streets. These intricate designs can be found in locations like London, Leicester, and Edinburgh, as well as several other major cities across the UK. Each piece of art features a different aspect of the natural world, such as busy bees and bushy-tailed squirrels.
A spokesperson for Hobbycraft said: "These displays are intended to make people smile and encourage a deeper appreciation for the animals that share our environment."
Designed by Knitcraft Specialist
The beautiful installations were designed and crafted by Knitcraft specialist Natalie Beard. She wanted to ensure the designs reflected the environmental causes that Sir David has supported throughout his long and distinguished career.
“Each topper is a celebration of Sir David’s incredible legacy and the wildlife he’s spent his life championing. We hope they inspire people to get creative and connect with nature,” said Natalie.
Auction for Environmental Causes
Once the celebrations end, the knitted toppers will be put to good use. They are set to be auctioned or gifted to help raise vital funds for various environmental organisations.
Get Involved
People are also being encouraged to pick up their knitting needles and get involved with the festivities. The spokesperson said: "Everyone is welcome to create their own wild designs and share them online to be in with a chance of winning a prize."
To help everyone get started, the retailer has provided free instructions for making a small crochet version of Sir David. There are also many other nature patterns available to download so that anyone can join in at home.
