Electric Six Gig Moved Amid Guildhall Issues

Several gigs and events scheduled for Gloucester Guildhall have been forced to relocate or face postponement after routine maintenance checks revealed issues in the ballroom.

The arts, entertainment and cultural venue on Eastgate Street operates within a 19th-century building and has a 400-capacity main hall, an independent 75-seat cinema, and a café-bar.

Gloucester City Council has confirmed that portions of the venue's programme have been rearranged after discovering an issue in the ballroom during annual maintenance inspections.

American rock outfit Electric Six, who were due to perform in the city on Tuesday (June 16), are amongst those impacted. Their performance will now go ahead at the Subscription Rooms in Stroud on the same date. All tickets remain valid for The Sub Rooms gig.

A spokesperson for Gloucester City Council said: "Gloucester City Council conducts annual maintenance checks across its buildings and venues. One of these checks identified that works are required in the Ballroom of Gloucester Guildhall, which has necessitated some of the venue's programme to be rescheduled until works are completed."

History of the Guildhall

The Guildhall was initially built in 1890 and inaugurated in 1892, having previously been occupied by Sir Thomas Rich's School. It served as the headquarters for the town clerk, accountant, surveyor, and other officials, and also contained council chambers, committee rooms, the mayor's parlour and a public hall for numerous years. The building hosted the annual Mayor's Ball.

Between 1985 and 1988, it underwent refurbishment and conversion into an arts centre, with modifications implemented to better suit its new purpose within the creative sector. The council chamber required an additional six months before it was transformed into the Chamber Cinema. Its stage was constructed from timber that had previously served as doorways throughout the building.

Current Operations

Today, it hosts a programme featuring more than 300 events, workshops and classes. The city council maintains that Gloucester Guildhall serves as the cultural heart of the city and continues to lead the way in delivering arts opportunities to local residents.
