Landmark Birmingham Mecca Bingo to Close for Good in June
Mecca Bingo in Birmingham to Close Permanently in June

An iconic Birmingham leisure venue is set to close its doors for the final time this summer. Mecca Bingo on Kettlehouse Road in Kingstanding, which occupies the historic Art Deco former Odeon Cinema building, is expected to shut on Sunday, June 7.

End of an Era

The venue is one of only two remaining Mecca Bingo halls in Birmingham. The building originally opened as part of Oscar Deutsch's Odeon cinema chain in July 1935. It ceased operations as a cinema in 1962 before being converted into a Top Rank Bingo Club and later a Mecca Bingo hall.

Financial Challenges

Rank Group, the parent company, cited financial difficulties as the reason for closure, stating that the hall has 'not been profitable for some time.' The site also requires 'considerable repairs' and is costly to maintain.

A spokeswoman for Rank Group said: 'It is with a heavy heart that we are proposing the closure of our Kingstanding club.'

Staff are currently being consulted about their future following the proposed closure.
