Monumental Knife Angel Sculpture to Visit Newark in 2026
The powerful Knife Angel sculpture, crafted from more than 100,000 confiscated blades, is set to arrive in Newark as a key stop on the UK National Youth Anti-Violence Tour. This striking artwork, created by the British Ironwork Centre, represents a profound statement against violent crime and serves as a memorial to victims.
A Sculpture Forged from Seized Weapons
Constructed over two years with support from police forces across the country, the angel utilised blades from a pool of over 200,000 knives removed from streets. The excess weapons were responsibly recycled, ensuring the project promotes safety beyond its visual impact. Many of the blades forming the sculpture's wings bear inscriptions—personal messages of loss and love from around 80 families who have lost loved ones to knife attacks. These heartfelt tributes add a deeply human element to the artwork, transforming instruments of harm into symbols of remembrance.
Community Collaboration Brings the Angel to Newark
Newark will become the first town in Nottinghamshire to host this temporary installation, thanks to a partnership between Newark and Sherwood District Council, We are Newark, and You Can Do Sport. Councillor Paul Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection and Community Relations, expressed his hope that residents will visit the "awe-inspiring" piece, noting its dual role as inspirational art and a crucial messenger about the dangers of knife crime.
Emma Holden, project manager of We Are Newark, highlighted the collaborative effort, stating the town is "delighted" to secure the sculpture. She emphasised the opportunity to host a "powerful, thought-provoking and nationally significant" work, with plans for a 30-day programme of community events.
Natalia Postlethwaite, director of You Can Do Sport, praised Newark's community spirit, noting an "overwhelmingly positive response" and growing involvement from local organisations. The project team, which includes Newark Town Council, is developing ambitious plans centred around the Knife Angel.
Exhibition Details and Educational Impact
The Knife Angel will be displayed in Newark town centre from April 21, 2026, until May 20, 2026, with the exact location to be announced. During its stay, a comprehensive programme of educational activities in schools and community settings will raise awareness about knife crime dangers.
As the UK's most travelled monument, the sculpture has visited over 50 cities, including Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, and Manchester, spreading its anti-violence message to millions. Its journey underscores a national commitment to addressing youth violence through art and dialogue.
