Chelmsford's Concrete Canvas and Essex Young Farmers Show Highlight Positive Community Spirit
Chelmsford's Concrete Canvas and Essex Young Farmers Show

Amidst the political turmoil and negative news, it is important to recognize positive developments in Chelmsford. Last weekend, two notable events showcased the vibrant community spirit of the area.

Concrete Canvas Street Art Festival

On Saturday, the Bond Street Bowl in central Chelmsford, located in front of John Lewis, was transformed into a hub of creativity for the latest edition of Concrete Canvas. Over recent years, Chelmsford has seen an influx of stunning murals that have revitalized previously drab walls with colorful and intricate designs. This initiative, organized by Chelmsford For You (the Chelmsford Business Improvement District), has brought internationally acclaimed artists to the city. Notable pieces include a giant eye overlooking Chelmsford Market by My Dog Sighs and a mural inspired by Chelmsford Mencap by local artists The London Police. This year, a new photorealistic face has been added to a wall near the bus stop at the multi-storey car park behind the market, created entirely by hand with spray paint.

Visitors enjoyed live art demonstrations, a close-up magician performing card tricks, and locally brewed beer from Chelmsford Brew Company. One artist from Sketch Face encouraged pairs to sit opposite each other, study faces, and sketch portraits, emphasizing observation and human connection over artistic skill. The event created a lovely atmosphere, and the new murals will continue to brighten the city.

Essex Young Farmers Show

Sunday featured the Essex Young Farmers Show at Boyton Hall in Roxwell, on the outskirts of Chelmsford. Marie Goldman, MP for Chelmsford, attended and met with representatives from the National Farmers' Union (NFU), the Country Land and Business Association (CLA), and Yana (You Are Not Alone), a rural mental health charity. Yana highlighted the mental health challenges faced by farmers due to the unpredictability of weather, disease, demand, and global geopolitics, which impact profit margins. Goldman emphasized the need for better government support for farming and food security, noting that the Liberal Democrats were disappointed that a Good Food Bill was not included in the recent King's Speech.

The show also featured gun dog training displays, a sheep show with dancing sheep, and a variety of local food from Essex businesses. Goldman praised the volunteers for organizing the event and encouraged residents to attend next year.

Both events highlight the positive community initiatives in Chelmsford, from public art to rural support, and offer opportunities for residents to engage and enjoy.
