Derbyshire Dancers to Perform in Professional Ballet Production
Four talented young dancers from Derbyshire are preparing to exchange their school routines for the professional stage as they join the cast of Coppélia at the Regent Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Selected from a competitive audition process that attracted over 160 applicants, these performers have secured their spots in the 95-member ensemble of the acclaimed English Youth Ballet (EYB).
Intensive Rehearsals and Professional Training
Since November, Layla Scott, Amelie Deeks, Lyla McFarlane, and Isla Moran from Derby have embarked on a rigorous journey, immersing themselves in the demanding world of professional dance. They will take the stage from Friday, March 20, to Saturday, March 21, performing alongside international principal artists in the classic, humorous ballet Coppélia.
The path to this performance has been highly intensive, with the young dancers committing to 60 hours of rehearsals over just 10 days. This schedule mirrors that of a professional company, featuring daily warm-up classes, rotating studio sessions, and full-company run-throughs. The experience is designed to refine their technique while boosting their artistic confidence.
Insights from Ballet Leaders
Janet Lewis OBE, director of EYB, emphasized the program's impact on nurturing local talent. "Our aim is to provide performance experience in beautiful venues close to where these aspiring dancers live," she said. "They learn about developing their artistic and performance skills as well as improving their technique. I am always amazed at how quickly they progress when presented with new challenges."
EYB Principal Ann Wall, who plays Swanhilda in the production, shared her enthusiasm for mentoring the young performers. "Being part of EYB is an amazing experience," she noted. "I feel honoured to be a role model to the dancers and help give them an insight into the world of professional ballet. It’s an experience that will stay with them forever."
The Production and Its Legacy
Coppélia is a comic ballet that tells the story of Franz, who becomes infatuated with a life-like doll created by Dr. Coppelius, leading to a series of humorous events. The English Youth Ballet has a strong reputation, having previously won The Stage Award for Special Achievement in Regional Theatre, with alumni performing at prestigious venues like The Royal Ballet.
For audiences at the Regent Theatre, this production offers more than just entertainment; it is an opportunity to witness emerging talent. The collaboration between world-class professional artists and exceptional local youth promises a grand spectacle, culminating in an extravagant wedding celebration that engages the entire community.
