Mazda has taken the wraps off its new fully electric saloon, the Mazda 6e, promising a range of up to 345 miles on a single charge. The model, revealed on 7 January 2025 at the Brussels Motor Show, marks a significant step in the Japanese automaker's electrification strategy.
Design and Performance
The Mazda 6e is built on a dedicated electric platform and features a sleek, aerodynamic design. It is available with two battery options: a 68.8 kWh battery providing a range of about 300 miles, and an 80 kWh battery offering up to 345 miles. The car accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 7.6 seconds for the standard version, while a performance variant achieves the same sprint in under 6 seconds.
Mazda has equipped the 6e with fast-charging capability, allowing the battery to go from 10% to 80% in approximately 22 minutes using a 200 kW DC charger. The car also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, enabling owners to power external devices.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the Mazda 6e offers a minimalist cabin with a 14.6-inch central touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and an augmented reality head-up display. The interior features sustainable materials, including recycled fabrics and vegan leather options. Mazda’s new infotainment system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air updates, and a 360-degree camera system.
According to Mazda, the 6e prioritises driver engagement with a low seating position and a near 50:50 weight distribution. The car also includes advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and traffic jam assist.
Market and Pricing
Mazda has confirmed that the 6e will go on sale in Europe in late 2025, with first deliveries expected in early 2026. Pricing is yet to be announced, but it is expected to compete with the Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai Ioniq 6. The 6e is part of Mazda’s plan to have five fully electric models by 2030.
"The Mazda 6e is a bold statement of our commitment to electrification while maintaining the driving pleasure our customers expect," said a Mazda spokesperson at the unveiling. The car aims to revive the mid-size saloon segment, which has seen declining sales in favour of SUVs.
Impact and Competition
The launch of the Mazda 6e comes as the electric vehicle market becomes increasingly competitive. With a range of up to 345 miles, it matches or exceeds many rivals, though real-world range may vary. The car’s fast-charging speed and V2L capability are key selling points. However, Mazda faces challenges in brand perception and charging infrastructure in some markets.
The 6e is expected to appeal to buyers seeking a stylish, practical electric saloon with a focus on driving dynamics. Mazda plans to offer a five-year or 100,000-mile warranty on the battery, providing peace of mind for early adopters.
