Snow Forces School Closures Across Black Country on Jan 5
Black Country Schools Shut Due to Snow

The return to school after the holidays has been disrupted for many families across the Black Country, as a blanket of overnight snow has led to widespread closures and delays for Monday, January 5, 2026.

Primary Schools Take Precautionary Action

Several primary schools have made the decision to close entirely following risk assessments of their sites and surrounding areas. In Smethwick, Uplands Manor Primary School on Addenbrooke Road informed parents it would be "closed today due to snow".

Wren's Nest Primary School in Dudley also closed, citing unsafe paths and roads around the estate despite preparatory work. School officials stated they would keep families updated regarding plans for Tuesday.

In Sedgley, both Cotwell End Primary School and Alder Coppice Primary School will remain shut. A notice from Alder Coppice explained that access to the site is problematic in such weather, and with more snow and freezing conditions forecast, opening was deemed unsafe.

Caslon Primary Community School in Halesowen also announced a closure, promising to update parents later in the day about Tuesday's arrangements.

College Implements Delayed Opening

Halesowen College has opted for a significant delay, informing students it will not open until lunchtime to allow travel conditions to improve. The decision was communicated via its Facebook page on Sunday afternoon, January 4.

The college confirmed there would be no morning coach service or lessons, with the coach service resuming at usual afternoon times. Importantly, students missing morning sessions will not be marked as absent. The institution emphasised it is tracking the weather carefully to ensure everyone's safety.

Focus on Safety and Communication

The consistent theme from all educational institutions is a primary concern for the safety of pupils, staff, and families during travel. Schools have emphasised early notification to help parents plan and have committed to providing ongoing updates about the situation for Tuesday, January 6.

The adverse weather serves as a sharp reminder of the winter challenges facing the region, with institutions prioritising caution and clear communication over routine.
