Cardiff Student Wins Top Prize at UK Science Competition

A talented student from Cardiff has secured a top prize at a major nationwide science and engineering competition. Oleksandr Zhuravel triumphed at The Big Bang Competition after discovering a simple method for households to protect the environment.

Project on Microplastic Pollution

The year 10 student from Fitzalan High School took home the Intermediate Science award at the prestigious event. Oleksandr investigated how everyday washing habits affect microplastic pollution from synthetic clothing. His clever project revealed that using a delicate wash cycle reduces microfiber release by approximately 30%.

The inspired young innovator wanted to take action after learning that washing machines are a significant source of ocean microplastics.
