Cranwell Primary School Launches Book for Military Children
Cranwell School Book Supports Military Children

Emma Pickles, alongside teacher Mrs Tamasin Craven and pupils of Cranwell Primary School, has written a book titled Friends Forever. The school is largely attended by children of serving personnel based at neighbouring RAF Cranwell.

Dedicated to Darcy Grace Standeven

The book is dedicated to former pupil Darcy Grace Standeven, who passed away in November 2024. Friends Forever recognises the needs of military children as they transition into new schools, following their serving families on successive postings.

Support from Charities

Recognising the importance of this story, the Lincolnshire branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, along with the RAF Personal Support and Social Work Service (RAF PS & SWS) and Cranwell Rainbows Guides Group – of which Darcy was a member – all donated funds to cover the initial print run.

Illustrations and Distribution

Illustrated by former pupil Jenny Langton and graphic designer James Mulhall, more than 300 copies of Friends Forever will be available for military children to take home.

Headteacher's Comments

Chris Wilson, headteacher of Cranwell Primary School, said: “Today we proudly celebrate a book that captures the very heart of our school: Courage, Perseverance, and Success - values that guide our pupils every day. This work stands not only as a reflection of those principles, but as a heartfelt tribute to a little girl who will always remain part of our community. Though she is deeply missed, Darcy’s spirit, joy, and memory will continue to inspire us all, now and for years to come. We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed their time, care, and dedication to bringing this meaningful book to life.”

Purple Up Day Launch

Launched to coincide with the Month of the Military Child’s “Purple Up Day” – an annual event where everyone wears purple in support of military children – the book was unveiled to a 300-strong assembly, attended by pupils, parents, families, teachers and representatives from SSAFA and other military organisations. The Month of the Military Child is celebrated every April and sees the Armed Forces community honour and recognise the sacrifices military families face, such as frequent moves and periods of separation.

SSAFA Chair's Remarks

Jim Evans, branch chair for SSAFA Lincolnshire, commented: “As a military child and then having served in the RAF myself, I understand the impact a book like Friends Forever can have, especially as I attended seven schools before my parents settled down. The Cranwell Primary School staff and children have written and illustrated this fantastic book which serves to support children as they transition into new schools and new surroundings. Our branch is honoured to have played a small role in this initiative, one of which is very close to our hearts.”

RAF PS & SWS Head of Service

Cathie Johnson, RAF PS & SWS head of service added: “This wonderful book, written and illustrated by Cranwell Primary School staff and children, offers meaningful support to military children facing new school transitions. We are proud to have played a part in this special project.”
