A former failing school has been 'rapidly and substantially improved', according to Ofsted. Notley High School in Braintree was declared as Requires Improvement when inspectors visited back in 2023, having been classified as Inadequate three years previously. Headteacher Mark Barrow arrived the following year with a mission to build a school where every young person could belong, achieve and thrive.
Today, he and his team are celebrating after welcoming Ofsted inspectors back once again in May - this time, stating the school has 'rapidly and substantially improved'. Under the new Ofsted framework, all aspects of a school are given grades ranging from Urgent Improvement, Needs Attention, Expected Standard, Strong Standard and Exceptional. Inspectors found all areas of Notley High to be Strong Standard and Expected Standard.
Inclusion and Leadership Praised
Of inclusion at the school, the report said: 'Leaders and staff at all levels are determined that every child thrives. They have established highly effective systems and a caring, personalised approach. This has significantly improved the experiences of, and increased opportunities for, pupils, including those who are disadvantaged.'
Of leadership and governance, inspectors said: 'Leaders have taken highly successful action to rapidly and substantially improve this school. They prioritised areas of the school's provision, starting with the curriculum, behaviour and attitudes. Leaders have taken clear, robust steps to improve each aspect.'
They described the school as a 'happy, highly welcoming place to be', where 'pupils enjoy learning and are achieving increasingly well'. Students reported feeling safe and supported, with sixth form students commenting on how they 'value how well staff know them and the close support that they get'.
Key Findings from the Report
- Students feel safe in school
- Students are united in their view that their school has improved significantly in recent years

Opportunities for Students
Inspectors highlighted the wide range of opportunities available to students - from boxing therapy and drama to the LGBTQ+ club, Model United Nations, overseas trips, and a comprehensive careers programme. Leaders check that all students, including those who are disadvantaged, can access every one of these opportunities.
Headteacher's Response
Headteacher Mark Barrow said: 'This report belongs to all of us and is a fair reflection on both our ambition and the progress we are making. For those who remember where we were, this is a transformation.'
'When the school was last inspected, it was judged to Require Improvement across a number of areas. Today, inspectors found a school that has been rapidly and substantially improved.'
'This outcome is a testament to the commitment of everyone in our community - our incredible staff, our determined students, our supportive families, and our governors and Trust. When I joined Notley in July 2024, I inherited a school with enormous potential.'
'The people here - staff and students alike - have always wanted to succeed. What we have done together is create the conditions for that to happen.'
'This report confirms that we are doing so. This inspection confirms that our children are learning in a school that cares deeply about them - not just about their grades, but about who they are and who they are becoming.'
While Mr Barrow is pleased with the updated report and grading, he is continuing to strive forward. He said: 'We are proud of what we have achieved - but we are not standing still. Our students deserve the very best, and we are committed to continuing this journey. We believe in every child's ability to belong, to achieve, and to thrive at Notley.'
Current Gradings
The school is now classed as providing a Strong Standard in inclusion and leadership and governance, and the Expected Standard in achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, personal development and wellbeing, and post-16 provision. The school community will come together for a celebration event to mark the milestone.
