Rachel Garbett, 22, admitted stealing almost £5,000 worth of Lego sets from supermarkets across Birmingham and Solihull in a series of raids in March and April. Birmingham Magistrates' Court heard that Garbett targeted Sainsbury's, Tesco, and B&M stores, taking high-value kits.
Details of the thefts
In one single swoop at a Sainsbury's store, Garbett stole £2,000 worth of Lego. Other thefts included £1,000 from Tesco, and three separate hauls from B&M valued at £400, £500, and £700. The total value of Lego stolen reached £4,600, though the exact sets were not disclosed in court. Additionally, Garbett stole £634 worth of goods from Homesense, including candles, and £468 of beauty products from an M&S.
Court proceedings
Garbett, who gave the court her sister's address in Acocks Green, admitted each theft. Lina Akhtar, prosecuting, stated: "This was a series of thefts of high-value items, including Lego." She noted Garbett had nine convictions for 16 previous offences. Garbett was due to be sentenced on July 16, but District Judge Michelle Smith deferred sentencing for intensive supervision. The judge warned: "I'm inclined to defer the sentence for intensive supervision. Show me you can do this." She added Garbett likely faces jail if she fails to comply. Garbett was remanded before the hearing but released on bail for the supervision order. The case is re-listed for sentence on August 27.
