A school sports trip to Disneyland Paris has gifted a group of Essex students with far more than just magical memories – they've returned home with sharpened netball skills and a runners-up trophy.
Tournament Triumph on French Soil
Twenty netball players from Years 8, 9, and 10 at Mayflower High School in Billericay recently spent five days in France competing in the prestigious Flying Dutchman Cup. The opportunity provided a unique blend of high-level sport and cultural experience for the talented cohort.
Before the tournament began, the students received an invaluable boost: four hours of professional coaching from former England netball player, Gabby Marshall. This expert guidance equipped the two school teams – the Under 14s and the Under 16s – for the intense competition ahead.
Battling Spirit Leads to Success
Both squads displayed remarkable determination, each playing a gruelling total of eight matches during the event. Their efforts were richly rewarded, with both the U14 and U16 teams being crowned runners-up in their respective categories.
PE teacher Rachel McSweeney was full of praise for her students' attitude and performance. "The girls were amazing; they were fantastic," she said. "They did not give up; they just kept on battling."
Lasting Benefits Beyond the Court
Ms. McSweeney highlighted the broader value of the trip, noting it was a crucial chance for players who don't compete at club level to experience that standard of play. "It was good for our girls to see what that looks like," she explained.
The impact of Gabby Marshall's coaching has been visibly carried back into school life. "The coaching they got was excellent. I have seen them bring some of what they learnt back to school with them," the teacher observed.
Perhaps the most significant outcome has been the strengthened bonds across year groups. "It has been great to see the girls, from different year groups, now talking to each other in the corridors at school," Ms. McSweeney shared. "It has brought a community feel across the year groups. They are looking out for each other now."
Of course, the educational visit wasn't all about sport. The students also enjoyed a well-deserved day of fun and thrills at the iconic Disneyland Paris, capping off a memorable and transformative trip that combined elite athletic development with unforgettable team-building.
