Holmwood School Wins Special Education School of Year for Fourth Time
Holmwood School Wins Fourth Special Education Award

An incredible run has seen pupils and staff at a Middlesbrough school secure a special accolade for the fourth year in a row. Holmwood School, described as a 'beacon of hope and opportunity,' has been named Special Education School of the Year in the 2025/26 Prestige Awards. This latest success follows a stellar series that saw the Saltersgill Avenue school receive a special golden trophy in 2025 to mark a hat-trick of wins.

A Nurturing Environment for Special Needs

Holmwood provides an inclusive environment for pupils aged four to 11 with a wide range of special needs. In their citation for the 2025/26 award, the judges highlighted the school's reputation for creating a 'serene, positive and nurturing' environment. They stated: "Located in an area grappling with high socio-economic deprivation and unemployment, Holmwood School offers a beacon of hope and opportunity for its students."

Impressive Outcomes

The judges noted that many Holmwood students successfully transition back to mainstream education, in some cases going on to university. They added: "The judges were particularly impressed by the inclusivity of the school, which is dedicated to turning the fortunes around for so many children."

Headteacher's Delight

Headteacher Dennis Ley said he was delighted that the efforts of everyone involved with the school had been recognised again. He said: "The awards over the last four years are a tribute to the dedication of the students, staff, parents, carers and the wider community, all of whom play crucial roles in the school's success. While receiving the award is an honour, there is always room for improvement, and the school remains committed to working hard every day to support young people, helping them to reach their full potential."

Council Praise

Councillor Philippa Storey, Middlesbrough deputy mayor and executive member for education and culture, said: "They've done it again - and I can't think of a more deserving school for this prestigious accolade. This doesn't happen by accident - to win this award four times in a row is a glowing testament to the efforts of Holmwood's brilliant pupils, and to all the teaching and support staff for creating such a safe, nurturing and caring environment. It's a blueprint for schools up and down the country and a credit to everyone involved."
