The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has achieved its highest-ever position in the QS World University Rankings, securing 47th place globally in the 2024 edition. This marks a significant rise from its previous rank of 53rd in 2023 and reflects the university's growing international reputation.

Key Factors Behind the Rise

According to QS, CUHK's improvement is driven by strong performance in academic reputation, employer reputation, and research impact. The university scored particularly well in citations per faculty, a measure of research quality, and international faculty ratio. CUHK's overall score increased to 82.4 out of 100, up from 80.2 last year.

Comparison with Other Hong Kong Universities

CUHK now ranks third among Hong Kong institutions, behind the University of Hong Kong (26th) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (40th). City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Polytechnic University also improved their positions, ranking 70th and 65th respectively.

Global Context

The QS World University Rankings 2024 feature over 1,500 universities worldwide. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retains the top spot for the 12th consecutive year, followed by the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford. Asian universities continue to rise, with the National University of Singapore (8th) and Peking University (17th) among the top 20.

CUHK's ascent is part of a broader trend of increasing competitiveness among Asian higher education institutions, driven by investments in research and international collaboration.
