Police Investigation Underway
Leicestershire Police were called to Oxford Street, near the junction with Bonners Lane, following reports that a man in his 20s had collapsed. While officers were en route, it was reported that the man had been stabbed. Despite being taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary by ambulance, he died a short time later.
Detectives from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Crime Team have been working through the night to establish the full circumstances. An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Lorna Granville provided details: "We are currently piecing together exactly what has occurred on the corner of Oxford Street and Bonners Lane between, what is reported, as two men involved in a confrontation. One of the men is believed to have been stabbed and has then collapsed in the street."
Appeal for Witnesses and Information
Police are conducting extensive enquiries, including reviewing CCTV footage from the area and speaking to potential witnesses. A significant police cordon remains in place on Oxford Street, near The Innovation Centre, part of De Montfort University, with multiple road closures causing major disruption.
Detective Inspector Granville made a direct appeal to the public: "We know a lot of people came to the aid of the victim before emergency services arrived and we want to thank them for their help. If you were one of these people and you haven’t yet spoken to police, please make contact with us."
Authorities are particularly keen to hear from:
- Anyone who witnessed the altercation between two men
- Motorists who were driving along Oxford Street around 5pm
- Individuals who may have captured footage on mobile phones or dash cams
Police have confirmed that local officers will be conducting reassurance patrols in the area over the coming days. Anyone with information is urged to call 101, quoting incident number 495 of February 3.
