With temperatures set to surge above 35C in parts of the country this week, households may be tempted to keep windows open all day. However, experts warn this could actually make homes warmer during the hottest periods.
When to Open Windows
According to the Red Cross, opening a window does not always cool your home. If the outside air is warmer than inside, it can worsen the situation. They recommend checking the forecast and opening windows only during cooler times, such as early morning and late evening.
During the hottest parts of the day, it is best to keep windows closed to keep warmer air out. When you do open them, create a cross-breeze by opening windows on different sides of the house to improve air circulation.
Additional Cooling Tips
Even with windows closed, sunlight streaming through glass can heat up a room quickly. The Red Cross advises covering windows during the day with blinds, curtains, or external shutters. If none are available, hanging a bed sheet or towel can have a similar effect.
These measures are crucial as thermometers are expected to hit 38C in some areas. By following this advice, residents can keep their homes cooler and reduce the risk of heat-related health issues.
