The Met Office has issued heat warnings for parts of eastern England as temperatures are set to reach 34C this Saturday. A total of 31 areas across the East Midlands, East of England, and London and South East England remain under the warning as a prolonged heatwave continues.
Heat peaks Saturday before cooler change
Met Office meteorologist Aiden McGivern explained that a "big change is on the way" after this week's blistering temperatures, with cooler, more unpredictable conditions arriving from the Atlantic over the weekend for large parts of the UK. However, relief won't reach all areas simultaneously. Eastern England is expected to retain the heat longer than other regions, with temperatures still anticipated to surpass 30C on Saturday.
Split conditions across the UK
McGivern stated on the forecaster's YouTube channel that conditions will alter as "low pressure systems in from the Atlantic, bring back a return to cooler weather, but also much more changeable weather through the weekend and into next week." While the transformation is expected to arrive in "virtually all parts" of the UK by Sunday, Saturday will witness a more marked split, with particular locations cooling down before others.
"As we go into Saturday, it's still a very warm start to the day across eastern and southeastern parts of the country. Feeling fresher further west," McGivern said. He emphasised that wind direction will prove decisive: "That breeze coming in from the southwest will certainly make it feel a little fresher in the north and west on Saturday compared with further east because actually in the east it is another hot day."
Temperatures up to 34C in east
Temperatures in the east could remain exceptionally elevated for this period of the year. The latest forecast suggests that mercury levels will generally exceed 30C, with peaks of up to 34C anticipated in London and East Anglia.
Sunday brings relief for most
Despite the drop in temperature, Sunday will prove to be an agreeable summer's day for most. "It will actually be a fine summer's day for many parts of England and Wales even if we've lost the heat and humidity," McGivern said. Temperatures are expected to decline to 27C in the southeast, falling to the high teens and low 20s throughout Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England, Wales and the West of England. While numerous areas should feel significantly more comfortable, McGivern cautioned that "that heat clinging on for the longest in the east of England."
