RAC roadside recovery teams are currently handling a massive surge in emergency call-outs as vehicle components fail under intense summer heat. The breakdown service reports far more calls than expected for a typical weekday, with numbers expected to multiply as a heatwave tightens its grip across the country.
Extreme Temperatures Trigger Red Weather Alert
A large area of high pressure stretching across Europe is driving hot air northwards, potentially pushing thermometers to 40°C. If these extreme conditions materialise, the UK could see its highest temperatures since the famous scorching summer of 1976. Forecasters have issued an emergency red weather alert to keep people safe during the daytime peak, covering a vast area from London to Swansea and from Somerset up towards Birmingham.
Common Vehicle Failures in Hot Weather
RAC breakdown spokesperson Simon Williams said: "Carrying an emergency kit in case of getting stuck at the side of the road is essential. This should include plenty of water, sunscreen, a large umbrella to protect from the sun and a portable battery pack to keep mobile phones charged." He added that high temperatures often cause tyre pressures to increase significantly, triggering dashboard warning lights. Williams urged drivers not to deflate tyres as this is likely to lead to too little pressure the next morning when it is cooler.
Essential Items to Keep in Your Car
Motorists are advised to carry an emergency kit. Recommended items include a basic emergency kit with a hazard warning triangle, tow rope, booster cables, foot pump, gloves, and torch; a first aid kit; a jump starter pack; a high-visibility jacket; and a tyre inflator with auto-shut-off and LED light.
