Birmingham's Centenary Square Fountains Set for Revival After Council Secures Spending Approval

The much-missed fountains in Centenary Square are poised to spring back into action, as Birmingham City Council has confirmed it has gained the necessary approvals to allocate funds for their restoration. This beloved attraction, which has been dormant since 2023, is set to return, bringing joy back to families and visitors who once enjoyed its water jets.

From Skating Rink to Water Feature: The Square's Recent History

In recent years, the space outside Symphony Hall and the Birmingham REP theatre has transformed into an impromptu skating rink for teenagers, taking advantage of the flat surface left by the deactivated water feature. Originally unveiled in 2019 as a key component of a new world-class public space, the fountains quickly became a popular spot, especially for children and families seeking fun on hot summer days.

The fountains were switched off in 2023, with subsequent assessments revealing that remedial works were required to fix them. However, a specific timeline for these repairs had remained unclear until now.

Council Confirms Funding and Contractor Liaison

A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council stated that Section 151 spend control approvals have been received, allowing the council to proceed with the renovation. "We are liaising with the contractors on when work can be carried out to bring the fountains back into operation," the spokesperson explained. Section 151 officer Carol Culley, who is legally responsible for the council's financial affairs, oversees this process.

This development comes despite the council's financial challenges, including its declaration of effective bankruptcy in September 2023 due to issues such as the equal pay dispute and a problematic IT system implementation. In its recent budget, the council announced a 4.99% rise in council tax, alongside promises of increased funding for libraries, museums, and youth services.

A Glimpse of the Past and Future Hopes

Earlier, water was temporarily pumped into the square for the Netflix world premiere of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, showcasing the illuminated Library of Birmingham and a flaming logo reflected on the surface. This event served as a nostalgic reminder of the square's former vibrancy.

While the council has previously offered reassurances about the fountains' return, no specific date has been set for their reactivation. Officials hope to provide further updates on the repair progress as more information becomes available, marking a positive step toward revitalizing this cherished public attraction.
