Rushden Pupil's Owl Lantern Triumphs at Twycross Zoo Design Contest

Saul Francolini, a ten-year-old pupil from Rushden Primary Academy, is celebrating a remarkable achievement after securing victory in Twycross Zoo's 2026 Lantern Design Competition. His hand-drawn owl design has been transformed into a large 3D lantern, now prominently featured along the zoo's popular Lantern Trail.

Inspiring Conservation Through Creative Artwork

Saul selected an owl for his design, describing the birds as "majestic and smart," and infused his artwork with a powerful message about protecting the planet. His mother, Sarah, expressed the family's overwhelming joy, stating, "When he found out he had won, he was speechless, shocked and surprised. He put so much thought and effort into drawing and colouring. I especially liked the way he had written down the feathers and how to save the planet."

Rigorous Judging Process Highlights Conservation Focus

The competition received 68 entries, all displayed on a gallery board at the trail's entrance. Entries were initially shortlisted by Twycross Zoo's Education and Marketing teams, with a final panel of Education Rangers selecting the winner. Judges evaluated submissions based on creativity, clarity, inspirational messaging, and the ability to encourage visitors to protect nature and wildlife. Saul's owl stood out for its strong conservation theme and imaginative interpretation of the brief.

From A4 Drawing to Striking 3D Lantern Display

The winning artwork was scaled up from an A4 sheet to a striking 3D lantern by the specialist team at Inlight Festival, who dedicated two days to bringing Saul's design to life. The lantern is now installed in the Gruffalo Wood section of the trail, where it will remain on display until the event concludes on 22 February.

Memorable Unveiling Celebrates Young Creativity

Saul enjoyed a special unveiling ceremony for his lantern, attended by his family, representatives from Twycross Zoo, and Inlight Festival members. This event marked a truly memorable celebration of young creativity and the importance of conservation efforts, highlighting how art can inspire action for wildlife protection.
