A leading UK energy supplier has started automatically transferring a crucial £150 winter payment directly to the meters of thousands of its customers this week.
Automatic Payments Begin for Eligible Households
Utilita Energy has confirmed that it commenced issuing payments under the government's Warm Home Discount scheme to customers with smart prepayment meters on 7 January 2026. The company plans to complete all payments to this group by the end of the month. The scheme is designed to provide a one-off payment of £150 to support those who may struggle with energy costs during the coldest part of the year.
The supplier highlighted that, due to rule changes in 2022 for England and Wales, eligible customers no longer need to apply for the support. "We’ll be in touch each year to confirm details," Utilita stated. This year's scheme is operational until 31 March 2026.
How the Payment Reaches You
The process differs depending on how a customer pays for their energy. For those with smart prepayment meters, the £150 is sent automatically as credit directly to their electricity meter. Customers can then use a 'Transfer Credit' feature within their online account if they wish to move some credit to their gas meter.
However, Utilita has introduced an important change for this winter. If a customer has an existing debt on their account, the Warm Home Discount payment will first be used to reduce that debt. Any remaining credit will then be available for energy use. The firm says this approach helps reduce debt burdens during winter, allowing more of a customer's regular top-ups to pay for actual energy consumption.
For customers who pay by Direct Debit or on receipt of a bill, the £150 will be credited to their energy account. They should see this reflected on the bill they receive in February, which covers January's usage.
What to Do If You Haven't Received Your Payment
Payments are being made in batches throughout January, meaning not all eligible customers will receive their £150 on the same day. Utilita has advised that if a smart prepay customer has not heard anything by 28 January 2026, they should contact the company directly. Similarly, Direct Debit customers who have not seen the credit on a bill after February should also get in touch.
The Warm Home Discount is a Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) scheme administered by energy suppliers. It targets low-income and vulnerable households, providing vital financial assistance to help keep homes warm during the winter months.
