Britain's largest energy supplier is urging customers across the country to make a tiny investment that could significantly improve their home heating this winter.
The 97p Solution to Cold Radiators
With wintry conditions and snowfall already affecting the UK this January, British Gas is advising households to purchase a simple tool: a radiator key, available for as little as 97p from retailers like Screwfix. The company's technical repair engineer, Peter Knowles, explains that this small outlay is key to tackling a common heating issue.
"Air can build up inside radiators for many reasons," said Peter. This trapped air creates cold spots and prevents radiators from working efficiently, leading to uneven heating and higher energy bills as the system struggles to warm the home.
How to Bleed Your Radiators
Peter Knowles provides clear instructions for the process, known as bleeding a radiator. "You will need a radiator key," he stated. "Open it only a little until you hear a hissing sound – this is the trapped air escaping. When the hissing stops and water begins to come out, catch the water in your container. Then tighten the valve again and move on to the next radiator."
These radiator keys, also called bleed keys, are typically universal and fit most standard radiators. Keeping one handy for regular maintenance ensures your heating system performs optimally during the colder months.
When to Call a Professional
The British Gas expert also cautions that bleeding radiators is not a cure-all. "If you’ve tried bleeding your radiators and you’re still having problems, there may be a more complicated issue," Peter explained. "At this stage, it is best to contact a Gas Safe registered engineer to take a look."
A Free Kitchen Heating Hack
In a separate energy-saving tip, British Gas smart energy engineer Jessica Rawstron shared a simple trick for recycling heat. "Once dinner comes out of the oven, we all close the door again. But why waste that heat?" she said.
Jessica advises: "Leave the oven door open and let the heat transfer slowly into your kitchen. It’ll help keep your house warm while you eat." She added the important safety note: "And, naturally, keep the kids and pets away from the door."
By taking these straightforward steps, households can enhance their energy efficiency, improve home warmth, and potentially reduce heating costs during this chilly January period.
