EDF Energy Urges UK Households to Avoid Peak Electricity Use for Free Sunday Power
EDF Urges UK Homes to Cut Peak Power for Free Electricity

EDF Energy is calling on households across the United Kingdom to refrain from using electricity during specific peak hours on weekdays, as part of a renewed initiative that rewards participants with complimentary power on Sundays. The energy supplier, which competes with major providers such as British Gas, OVO, EON Next, Scottish Power, and Octopus, has reintroduced its popular free electricity offer, aiming to help customers manage their energy costs more effectively.

How the Sunday Saver Challenge Works

Under the Sunday Saver challenge, EDF customers are encouraged to shift their electricity usage away from peak hours, specifically between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays throughout the month of February. By doing so, participants can earn between four and sixteen hours of free electricity on the following Sunday. This unique scheme is designed to alleviate financial pressures on households while promoting more sustainable energy consumption patterns.

Exclusive Benefits for EDF Customers

EDF stands out as the only energy provider currently offering four consecutive Sundays of free electricity over the upcoming month. This initiative allows customers to save money on their utility bills and enhance their weekend experiences without the worry of escalating energy costs. The programme builds on previous successful campaigns, including a festive promotion last month that provided free electricity to customers who enrolled in the challenge.

Impressive Participation and Savings

Since its inception in 2024, the Sunday Saver challenge has garnered significant traction, with more than 260,000 customers benefiting from the scheme. Collectively, these participants have earned over 17.5 million hours of free electricity, resulting in approximately £5.2 million credited to British energy bills. In a recent highlight, the Southeast of England emerged as the top-performing region in 2025, with customers accumulating over one million free hours of electricity, averaging 25 hours per customer each month.

Real-Life Testimonials from Participants

Natasha Shields, a resident from Barnsley in South Yorkshire, has personally earned more than 680 free hours on Sundays since joining the challenge. She shared her positive experience, stating, "The Sunday Saver challenge is brilliant - and has helped us with the cost of living which is getting more expensive by the day. We switch off everything we can between 4–7pm, leaving cooking and showers until after this time. During those hours, we use a battery-powered light and play board games together, which has brought us closer as a family. We use the free electricity we've earned for cleaning, meal prep and laundry on Sunday, which is helpful."

Expert Insights on Energy Efficiency

Jon Perks, Sales & Marketing Director at EDF, emphasised the practical benefits of the initiative, commenting, "With winter bills at their highest, Sunday Saver continues to give customers a simple, practical way to cut costs when they need it most. Households can track their usage through our Energy Hub, and spot opportunities to save electricity across their home, reducing their carbon footprint at the same time. It’s a straightforward way to ease pressure on bills while supporting a more sustainable electricity grid."

This programme not only offers financial relief but also encourages households to adopt more energy-efficient habits, contributing to broader environmental goals by reducing peak demand on the national grid.
