Octopus Energy has expanded its revolutionary Zero Bills initiative to Scotland, marking a major milestone in the fight against fuel poverty and high energy costs. The energy supplier has launched the country's first eligible homes where residents will pay absolutely nothing for their domestic energy for at least ten years.
Scotland's First Zero Bills Development
The groundbreaking scheme has gone live at the Tranent Grove development in North Dundee, built by Discovery Homes. All 57 properties on the site will be eligible for Octopus Energy's Zero Bills tariff as an optional upgrade for buyers. This represents the very first Zero Bills site to be established north of the English border.
Launched initially in 2022, the Zero Bills model allows customers to move into new homes that are pre-equipped with state-of-the-art green technology. This package includes:
- A high-efficiency air source heat pump
- Solar panels
- A home battery storage system
The combination of these technologies guarantees no home energy bills for a minimum period of five to ten years.
A Global Movement Gathers Pace
This Scottish launch follows swiftly on the heels of Octopus Zero Bills' recent expansion into France. The UK, Germany, and New Zealand are already part of this growing international movement to eliminate energy costs for households.
Through partnerships with leading property developers, Octopus Energy has now approved Zero Bills eligibility for over 5,000 homes across its operating countries. The scheme covers a diverse range of housing tenures, including affordable rentals, private rentals, and properties for private or shared ownership.
The company has set an ambitious target to deliver 100,000 Zero Bills homes globally by 2030.
Industry Leaders Hail a "New Gold Standard"
Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Director at Octopus Energy, commented on the Scottish launch. "Scotland is a renewable energy powerhouse - making it the perfect next spot for us to roll out Zero Bills homes," he said. "By working with leading developers like Discovery Homes, we're shaking up the future of housing, bringing the reality of no home energy bills to the people of Scotland."
Grant White, Director of Discovery Homes, echoed this sentiment, describing the partnership as a proud milestone. "At Discovery Homes, our mission has always been to build properties that don't just meet today's standards but anticipate the needs of the future," White stated.
"Partnering with Octopus Energy to deliver Scotland's first Zero Bills homes at Tranent Grove integrates cutting-edge green technology with our high-quality builds. We are offering our owners long-term financial peace of mind and a sustainable lifestyle that was once a pipe dream. This is the new gold standard for Scottish housing."
This development signals a significant shift in the UK's housing and energy sectors, proving that technology-driven solutions can provide tangible financial relief and advance the nation's net-zero ambitions simultaneously.
