New Smart Meter Regulation Brings Automatic £40 Payments to UK Households

A significant smart meter rule change taking effect today across the United Kingdom means thousands of British households could be in line for automatic £40 payments. The shake-up requires energy suppliers to provide compensation directly to customers without the need for applications when specific criteria are met.

Compensation Criteria for Energy Customers

Energy firms must now hand out £40 automatically under several circumstances:

  • If they miss smart meter installation targets or scheduled appointments
  • When households wait more than six weeks for a smart meter appointment
  • If an installation fails due to a fault within the supplier's control
  • When energy companies fail to provide a clear action plan within five working days after a customer reports an issue

This represents a substantial shift from previous regulations where energy suppliers faced fines only for failing to meet installation targets, without consideration for whether installed meters were actually functioning properly.

Ofgem's Rationale for the New Rules

Melissa Giordano, deputy director of systems and processes at Ofgem, explained the regulator's position: "Smart meters offer customers accurate bills, cheaper tariffs, and real-time energy use tracking. Every customer who wants a smart meter should get one quickly, and it should work from day one. These new rules will set clear expectations of suppliers, drive better performance, and protect consumers when things go wrong."

The previous system created a disincentive for energy companies to allocate resources toward fixing malfunctioning smart meters since targets focused solely on installation numbers rather than operational performance.

Future Regulatory Developments

Ofgem has indicated it "intends to take forward further work" on smart meter performance standards with plans to implement additional measures later this year. The regulator, which also oversees the energy price cap announcement expected this week, is currently awaiting the Government's response to its separate review of smart meter performance standards.

These new compensation policies will undergo review in early 2027 to ensure they continue delivering positive outcomes for consumers. The automatic payment system represents a significant step toward holding energy suppliers accountable for both installation timelines and equipment functionality.
