Beko Warns: Milk in Fridge Door Reduces Freshness

Beko Issues Warning Over Fridge Door Milk Storage

UK households that store semi-skimmed milk in their refrigerator door compartments have been strongly advised to relocate it immediately. Appliance manufacturer Beko has issued a clear warning that this common practice could be significantly decreasing the longevity of food and beverages throughout the entire fridge, simply due to poor organizational habits.

Temperature Fluctuations Impact Food Longevity

Salah Sun, Head of Product Management at Beko, emphasized: "The way we organise our fridges can make or break our efforts to reduce food waste. Most people don’t realise that poor fridge organisation isn’t just about aesthetics – it directly impacts food longevity and your household budget."

Sun explained that temperature varies considerably within different zones of a refrigerator. The bottom shelf, being the coldest area, is ideally suited for raw meats. Meanwhile, the middle shelves maintain the most consistent and ideal conditions for dairy products like milk and other prepared foods.

"The door, often used for milk, is actually the warmest area due to frequent opening," Sun clarified. Beko recommends that households should keep more temperature-stable items such as condiments, sauces, and drinks in the door compartments instead. They advise moving milk to the middle shelf where temperatures remain far more constant and reliable.

Benefits of Proper Fridge Organization

Beko further highlights that an organized fridge offers multiple advantages beyond just food preservation. "When you can see and access everything easily, you’re more likely to cook at home and make healthier choices," the company stated. Additionally, maintaining optimal storage conditions ensures that fresh produce lasts significantly longer, which directly reduces both household food waste and the frequency of grocery shopping trips.

Public Reaction and Further Insights

The discussion has sparked reactions online, with one Reddit user offering a more detailed thermal analysis: "The door being open for 5 seconds is not the most relevant thermal factor. What's a lot more impactful is that when you swing open a side facing door, you create an air current that pulls all the cold air out, and because the fridge is on its side, it all spills out into the room."

The user added: "Even if you open your fridge door for 30 seconds, it can take 30 minutes for the temperature to recover fully, and the back of the fridge will be colder than the front during that time. The drawers are significantly more temperature stable than the rest of the fridge in a standard side loader." This underscores the complexity of fridge thermodynamics and supports Beko's core recommendation for strategic food placement.
