Tesco's 49p Cranberry Sauce Beats Ocean Spray in Festive Taste Test
Best Cranberry Sauce is Cheapest at 49p

For many families, the Christmas dinner plate simply isn't complete without a generous spoonful of tangy cranberry sauce. But with so many jars lining the supermarket shelves, which one offers the perfect balance of flavour, texture, and value? Parenting Editor Zoe Chamberlain put eight popular options to the test to find the ultimate festive condiment.

The Festive Taste Test: A Saucy Showdown

The investigation, conducted in December 2025, pitted the well-known brand Ocean Spray against own-label versions from seven major UK supermarkets: Sainsbury's, Asda, Tesco, M&S, Aldi, Lidl, and Morrisons. Each product was judged on its ingredients, nutritional value, price, and most importantly, its taste.

The famous Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce, priced at £1.25 for 200g (63p per 100g), set the benchmark. Made with just four ingredients and free from artificial additives, it was hard-set and packed with whole berries, offering a sharp, seedy flavour that earned it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

The Surprising Winner Emerges

In a result that proves price isn't always an indicator of quality, the clear champion was Tesco's Cranberry Sauce. Costing a mere 49p for a 200g jar (just 25p per 100g), it was less than half the price of the Ocean Spray, Morrisons, and M&S options.

Despite its budget-friendly price tag, the Tesco sauce impressed with its quality. It was suitable for vegans and free from artificial colours and flavours. The tester noted its attractive appearance, with round slices of cranberry instead of whole berries, resulting in less skin and an easier spread. It delivered a lovely sharp tang with no bitterness, securing a full 5-star rating.

How The Other Supermarkets Fared

The taste test revealed a wide variety in texture, flavour, and value across the board:

Lidl's sauce, also 49p for 200g, was the closest in texture and flavour to Ocean Spray, earning 4 stars for its sharp, seedy profile.

Aldi's offering at the same price point was deemed fruitier and sweeter, more like a jam, and received 3 stars.

Sainsbury's sauce (69p for 250g) was found to be a little too sweet with a textured skin and seed presence, also scoring 3 stars.

M&S (£1 for 200g) presented the prettiest, glossiest jar, smooth and stir-free, but its jam-like sweetness and aftertaste led to a 3-star score.

Morrisons smooth version (£1.50 for 200g) was marked down for lacking flavour, scoring 3 stars, though their wholeberry sauce was noted as being much cheaper.

Bringing up the rear was Asda's sauce (51p for 200g), which was very hard, needed vigorous stirring, and left an aftertaste the tester wasn't keen on, resulting in a 2-star rating.

The Final Verdict on Festive Flavour

The conclusion was definitive. Tesco's Cranberry Sauce was crowned the winner, triumphing on both taste and exceptional value for money. For those looking to elevate their Christmas dinner without straining their wallet, this 49p jar proves that the best option isn't always the most expensive or the most famous brand.
