Green Ramadan Plastic Bottle Drive Launches Across Welsh Mosques
The Bengal Dragons Foundation has officially launched its Green Ramadan Plastic Bottle Drive, a pioneering community-led initiative designed to promote environmental stewardship during the holy month of Ramadan. This ambitious project targets the recycling of up to 100,000 plastic water bottles used after evening taraweeh prayers in mosques throughout Wales.
Addressing Increased Waste During Ramadan
As mosque attendance surges nightly throughout Ramadan, the foundation is taking proactive steps to ensure that single-use plastic bottles are managed responsibly, preventing them from ending up as waste. Specially marked recycling bins have been distributed to various mosques, where the initiative has already garnered enthusiastic support from congregants and leaders alike.
Sheikh Muhammed Toulba, Imam of the South Wales Islamic Centre, praised the effort as a tangible demonstration of faith in action. He emphasized that caring for the Earth is an integral part of religious responsibility, making this drive a meaningful expression of Islamic values.
Community Collaboration and Environmental Impact
Babru Miah, Project Coordinator at the Bengal Dragons Foundation, explained the motivation behind the campaign: “Ramadan unites our communities every night. With larger gatherings comes increased waste, and it is our collective duty to handle it properly.” The drive is powered by partnerships with recycling experts Viridor and the Prosiect Gwyrdd Community Fund, ensuring that collected plastic is processed to generate sustainable energy and bolster the circular economy in Wales.
Organisers anticipate diverting over two tonnes of plastic from general waste streams in just one month, positioning this as one of the largest faith-led environmental efforts in the country. The project underscores the proactive leadership of local Muslim communities in addressing climate challenges through straightforward, localized actions.
Expanding Reach and Future Goals
The Bengal Dragons Foundation, a grassroots organisation known for its youth and community programmes, is expanding its environmental work with this initiative. The team is now inviting additional mosques across Wales to participate in the campaign, aiming to broaden its impact and foster greater community involvement in sustainability efforts.
This Green Ramadan Drive not only tackles plastic pollution but also serves as a model for how faith communities can lead in environmental conservation, inspiring others to take similar steps toward a greener future.
