With the Met Office forecasting sweltering conditions to persist well into next week, anyone working from home - particularly in a timber summerhouse or garden office - is likely feeling the heat. Internet 'plant hacks' are currently circulating, claiming that a few strategically placed houseplants will magically lower the room temperature... but is there truth in this?
The Science of Transpiration
The reality is that a houseplant cannot actively lower the thermostat by pumping cold air into a room. However, they can alter how a room feels through a biological process called transpiration. Think of transpiration as 'plant sweat'. Plants absorb water through their roots, use it for nutrient uptake, and then release excess moisture into the surrounding air through tiny pores in their leaves. As this moisture evaporates, it cools the air immediately surrounding the foliage.
Maximising the Cooling Effect
To maximise this effect, you cannot just scatter a single, lonely plant across the room. Christopher Murphy, from Dunster House, explains the mechanics: "Certain houseplants can help create a fresher, cooler-feeling environment through transpiration. Grouping your plants closely together forms a small microclimate that maximises the refreshing effect on the surrounding air."
If you want to try building a biophilic cooling pod, Murphy recommends three specific plants that excel at returning high volumes of moisture to a stuffy room:
- Areca palms: Known for their feathery fronds, these offer superb natural humidifying qualities. Keep them in a bright spot away from harsh afternoon sun and ensure the soil stays damp.
- Boston ferns: The dense foliage of a Boston fern provides a massive surface area, making it highly efficient at releasing moisture. They thrive in filtered light and hate direct breezes.
- Peace lilies: These offer large, lush green leaves and top-tier moisture release. Crucially, they handle darker corners better than most, making them perfect if your building sits in the shade for part of the day.
What's Not Helping
It's worth noting that even if you optimise your plants and ventilation, you might be actively heating your room from the inside. All office gadgets - from laptops and printers to small bar fridges - generate surprising amounts of internal heat.
- Power down: Leaving equipment on standby means it is still generating residual warmth. Turn them completely off when not in use.
- Downgrade the hardware: Switching from a bulky, high-powered desktop computer to a compact laptop during a major heatwave will drastically cut down internal heat generation.
- The escape route: Because heat rises, a pitched roof will easily trap hot air right above your head. Installing a dedicated vent at the highest point of the roof gives that trapped heat an easy way to escape, naturally drawing cooler air in through lower openings.
Garden Office Tips
External shade is highly effective, explains Murphy, but letting climbing plants anchor themselves directly onto your timber office walls is a recipe for structural disaster, as it traps dampness and ruins the wood.
Instead, grow fast-climbing varieties over a separate, adjacent archway or a standalone trellis. This creates a lovely natural barrier that cools the air through evaporation before it even reaches your glass, while still allowing air to circulate freely around the building's exterior. Spruce up the exterior with a pale paint finish like cream or sage green, which actively reflects heat rather than absorbing it. Just make sure you never apply new paint in direct sunlight, or the mixture will dry too fast and leave heavy brush marks.
