The Southport Macmillan Centre has announced that its Cancer Navigator Service, which supports numerous cancer patients in Southport and Formby each year, is likely to lose funding from the end of March 2027. The funding withdrawal comes from the Southport and Formby Primary Care Network, placing the service under threat of closure.
Impact on Patient Support
The service provides essential support around the time of diagnosis and after, addressing emotional, practical, and financial issues. Without this funding, the support will not be available in the same way, and some patients will miss out altogether.
The centre has received overwhelming support from present and former cancer patients, colleagues, local politicians, and community organisations. This follows a BBC article and a visit from BBC Look Northwest Health Correspondent Gill Dummigan, where several service users shared their stories.
Centre Remains Open
While awaiting the final funding decision, the centre assures everyone that it remains open and available to offer support to people affected by cancer in Southport and Formby.
