Michael Barrymore Recovers from Hernia Surgery at Devon Home
Former television legend Michael Barrymore, aged 73, has revealed he is recovering from a painful hernia operation at his new coastal home in Devon. The star, who recently moved to the area after abandoning plans to relocate to Spain, told fans he was "resting up" and unable to do much due to the gruelling recovery process.
Recovery Challenges and Gentle Strolls
Barrymore managed a gentle stroll with his cherished dog, Lara, at Blackpool Sands near Dartmouth, but the discomfort limited their outing. He explained, "I can't do a lot until I recover, so we just slept all day in the sunlight and chilled out." The pain has been significant, with Barrymore noting he has loads of painkillers from the hospital that he avoids taking because they make him drowsy.
Captioning a social media post about his condition, he simply wrote, "Recovering from surgery." According to the NHS, a hernia develops when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the muscle or surrounding tissue, often forming between the chest and hips. While most hernias cause no symptoms, some individuals may notice a swelling or lump in the abdomen or groin.
Support from Fans and Community
Supporters quickly rallied around Barrymore, with messages flooding in. One fan wrote, "You are fit and blessed you will be ok Michael," while another advised, "Take it easy, quick recovery." A third commented, "Wishing you a speedy recovery, take care of yourself," and a fourth typed, "Get well soon, Michael."
After waking from the surgery, the former Strike It Lucky host humorously quipped, "Okay the surgery was a success, but what if I'm not funny anymore?" This light-hearted moment contrasted with the serious nature of his recovery.
Settling into Devon Life
Barrymore picked up the keys to his new property earlier this month and was visibly moved by the warm welcome from the local community. He has since explored nearby beaches, visited Cranch's Sweet Shop in Salcombe, and popped into several local garden centres. Reflecting on the move, he told fans online, "I can't believe I've been in my new home for nearly a week already and this move has been quite stressful, so I've cut down to one job a day so I'm not overwhelmed by it all."
He also shared details about his temporary living arrangements, revealing he has been sleeping on a mattress on the floor while awaiting a custom-made pink bed delivery in June to match his sofa. His room appeared sparse, with "five days of washing that has piled up" gathered in one corner.
Heartwarming Community Interactions
Barrymore described how residents welcomed him, saying, "All the kids in the neighbourhood found out where I live and they all showed up on my driveway to say hi and greet me to the neighbourhood." He became emotional after their visit, reflecting, "I've never had such an outpouring of love after moving into a new place and these kids today are so polite and smile."
The television personality turned social media star was later asked to participate in a community theatre group at a local school. He said, "Because I've said yes to everything since moving here, I turned up. I took part for a bit and gave them some good advice." This engagement highlights his integration into the Devon community despite his recovery challenges.
According to Guys and St Thomas' Specialist Care, between 100,000 and 120,000 people across the UK are affected by hernias annually, making Barrymore's experience a common health issue. His openness about the recovery process sheds light on the realities of post-surgery life for many.
