An 18-year-old from Wales is being treated in a hospital in China after a serious crash involving a lorry while on a charity cycling challenge. Dyfan Hughes was part of a trio cycling 6,000 miles from Wrexham to Thailand when the accident occurred.
His friends, Louis Dennis, 19, and James Thomas, 19, both from Llangollen, North Wales, have provided an update on his condition. They said Dyfan's parents flew out immediately and have been at his bedside throughout his treatment.
Charity Ride in Memory of Friend's Father
The three teenagers were cycling to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation in memory of Tony Edge, the father of their friend Harrison. Tony died after suffering a heart attack in 2024.
The group had reached China when Dyfan was involved in the crash. He sustained head, neck, and leg injuries and was rushed to a medical facility, where he remains, according to North Wales Live.
Friends' Update on Dyfan's Condition
In a message posted on Facebook, Louis and James expressed gratitude for the support they have received. They wrote: "As you know, last week Dyf got into an unfortunate accident on the road with a lorry and we would just like to start by thanking everyone for their kind messages and donations, it really means a lot to us."
They added: "Now, the full extent of the injuries and the road to recovery are still unknown but we're going to try and update you as much as we can. Dyf's parents flew out straight away and have been by his bedside the whole time."
Fundraising Exceeds £50,000
The friends reported that Dyfan is "bright and alert and in good spirits" and that he has been "really well looked after in the hospital." They said, "That lad is as tough as they come and it's going to take more than a fight with a lorry to break him."
The fundraising campaign has already raised more than £50,000 for the British Heart Foundation. Supporters can continue to contribute through the group's online fundraising page.
